Explosion In Bauchi Attributed To Faulty Electric Power Transformer As Police Confirm Attacks On Tafawa Balewa and Katagun

Eyewitnesses at the JIBWIS conference in Bauchi township now add that the three loud explosions heard overnight ion in the city was as a result of a faulty electric transformer that blew up close to the JIBWIS conference center.

Saharareporters had contacted the Commissioner of police in the state directly as citizen reporters affiliated to SR told they heard the explosions.

The CP responded to our inquiries by saying there was a bomb explosion on a railway line in Bauchi Township, apparently it wasn't a bomb as previously reported.

However, there were two separate attacks in Tafawa Balewa LGA and Lamar Katagun in the state.

Earlier today it was reported that Islamist militant fighters are currently attacking several towns in Bauchi state including Bauchi township the state capital.

Eyewitnesses to Saharareporters that a police station in Tafawa Balewa local government area was targeted while another military checkpoint was attacked by Boko Haram gunmen at Marar Rabar Liman Katagun.

The police commissioner in Bauchi state also confirmed to Saharareporters that a bomb exploded near a railway line in Bauchi Township, but residents said they heard three explosions near IBB Square and the Jahun area.

It was with great dismay that I awoke a few days ago to see the pictorial publications being circulated about my family and me by the on-line media. It has stirred up a great deal of controversy and has portrayed our family in a negative light.

The pictures posted were taken over a period of time, some before my mother left the private sector as an ED at Shell to work for the Nigerian government.  Although I benefited from a comfortable upbringing I was raised in a fairly strict environment by a military father who insisted that we worked to support ourselves whilst in school. He ensured that we had the basic minimum to support us covering tuition food and transport only.

Some claim a mischief maker wants to shift the blame of the revelation on Ese- others claim an angry wife wants to 'teach' the 'wayward girl' a lesson- bits and pieces accompanying the photographs alleged 'Funmi is comfortable with married men with extra cash to spare'

Unconfirmed sources further stretched talks surrounding the source as 'a concerned party, particular about exposing an illicit affair and a supposed role model's double life'
 

Funmi is said to be an alternate preacher- and occasional leader of the choir at her late father's church.

Part of her role model status is evident in a herparticipation in famed Gospel singer,  Kirk Franklin BET’s ‘Ssunda best’.

In some cases the pictures were accompanied with tales depicting her 'a hard partying night club prowler- with mounting debt to the bargain.

Heidi Klum and Seal are to file for divorce after six years of marriage, according to reports.
The couple will apparently file divorce papers in the LA County Superior Court early next week, TMZ reported.

The website said German supermodel Heidi, 38, will cite 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the split.

The reports have shocked fans of the couple who often make public displays of affection at red carpet events, and are a picture of happiness with their four children.

Two Bomb Explosions Hits President Goodluck Jonathan’s Home State, Bayelsa

Two explosions have rocked Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa state and home state of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The explosions came after the northern city of Kano was hit by bombs and gunfire that left several people dead. Eyewitnesses in Kano say they have seen more than 20 bodies after Friday's attacks, as the city remains under curfew.

However, the Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, indicated that the Yenagoa blasts were linked to upcoming governorship elections and not Islamist sect, Boko Haram which claimed responsibility for the Kano attacks.

“Governor Timipre Sylva has just been informed of two explosions that rocked parts of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, late Friday night,” a statement from his office said.

A spokesman for the military task force in the region said there had been no casualties.

“The (joint task force) confirms that there were dynamite explosions in certain parts of Yenagoa city yesterday. However, there was no casualties,” Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Antigha said.

Nigerian Radio Journalist Found Dead Is In Jos, the state capital of Plateau.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said a news editor for a government-owned radio station called Highland FM in the restive central Nigerian city of Jos was found dead in a shallow stream Thursday. Colleagues of Nansok Sallah, 46, believe he was murdered, the committee said.

Sallah previously worked for private radio station Cool FM in Abuja and Plateau State Radio and Television, the committee said.

"We mourn the death of Nansok Sallah and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues," said Mohamed Keita, the committee's Africa Advocacy Coordinator. "Authorities in Jos must pursue all leads in tracking his killer and bring those responsible to justice."

Boko-Haram's Letter To The People Of Kano State

Barely 24 hours after the multiple bomb blast which hit the city of Kano, leaving several people dead and even Channels Television reporter, Enenche Akogwu may his soul RIP was shot and killed in Kano yesterday.

This Boko Haram's letter not too sure of when exactly it was released was rightly addressed to the people of Kano State.

It was translated from the Arabic version and it contains WARNING to "Muslims who may be assisting in fighting against the Boko Haram Sect"

This message is to the people of Kano. You should know that the security (Police) in Kano are using tricks in arresting our people, that is they tell people in different neighborhoods that they are arresting thieves or armed robbers – you should know that it is our people that they are arresting.

We do not have any intention of touching any people of this town if they do not touch us. Because our war is with the Government that is fighting Islam with the Christian association of Nigeria (CAN) that are killing Muslims even eating their flesh and those who helped them to fight us even if they are Muslims.

Govt declares 24-hour curfew in Kano after suicide blast, explosions

The Kano State Government has declared 24-hour curfew after suicide blast, explosions

Meanwhile security forces in Nigeria’s second-largest city, Kano, battled gunmen after a suicide blast killed at least 6 police officers and several other major explosions targeted them Friday.

The city erupted in chaos, with some 20 explosions heard and at least five police offices thought to have been targeted.

Local television was reporting that scores were feared dead in the attacks. Police were not responding to phone calls, but the state government announced a 24-hour curfew until further notice.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the violence, though previous such attacks in Nigeria’s north have been blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram.

A senior police source said the suicide blast occurred at a regional police headquarters. Residents reported blasts and gunfire at the state police headquarters and said that at least two other police posts appeared to have been targeted.

An explosion was also heard in the area of a secret police office.

“There was a suicide attack on the police zone 1 headquarters,” the senior police source said on condition of anonymity. “So far two officers have been killed and the bomber also.”

Bomb Blast In Kano Kills Channels Television Reporter, Enenche Akogwu

Channels Television officially confirms, with great sadness, the death of our reporter Enenche Akogwu who was killed in the Kano city’s multiple attacks on Friday.

The 31-year-old reporter was shot by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, outside the Kano state government house while in the line of duty.

Akogwu graduated Benue State University in 2004 and joined Channels Television as a reporter in the nation’s capital city of Abuja, two years ago. He was later made the station’s correspondent in Kano.

A resourceful and fearless reporter, Enenche Akogwu covered the northern region uncovering breaking stories and events across the troubled northern region.

He was the winner of Channels Television’s 2011 Chairman’s award and was honoured at the station’s end of the year celebration.

Akogwu had only returned to Kano two days ago after spending some time in Lagos. The management is deeply saddened by the death of their courageous reporter.

The attack at the Zone 1 Police headquarters was carried out by a suicide bomber driving a Honda Civic, Daily Trust can confirm.

The bomber had succeeded in breaking through the gates of the building and rammed the car into the wall of a vocational centre in which wives of Police officer learn sewing.
The building is adjacent to the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 1. It was completely destroyed. According to one of the victims, he saw at least 3 dead bodies lying around.

At least 30 others suffering from varying degrees of injuries have been taken to different hospitals across the state. The whole area has been cordoned off.

Gunmen also stormed the headquarters of the State Police Command in Bompai and engaged the policemen there in a drawn out gun duel. Casualty figures are not yet known.

A second blast is said to have gone off at the SSS headquarters after a first blast caused the security agents to cordon off the immediate vicinity of their office.

On Friday 23rd December 2011, the city of Calabar saw a damsel crowned the 2011 Carnival Calabar Queen. The new queen - Emem Udonquak (Final Year Student of the University of Uyo), who is now officially the Calabar’s Tourism Ambassador and spokesperson for Mothers Against Child Abandonment (An initiative of the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State Obioma Liyel-Imoke) battled it out for the coveted crown with over 30 contestants for 2 weeks.

Judging the contestants on the D-day were Betty Irabor (Editor of Genevieve Magazine), Darey Art Alade, Charles Okon, Chinenye Uwanaka and pioneer photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi. Together they screened all contestants and chose the ultimate damsel who deserved the chance to wear the crown for a year.

The hosts of the day - Ivor Ekpe and Diana Mary promised to deliver an extraordinary show like no other and it was indeed a show not to forget. All the contestants came on stage to represent one of Cross River State’s tourist destinations, as they each appeared on stage, an audiovisual recording of their profiles was projected on huge screens, enabling the judges assess them on diction and poise.

How Boko Haram’s Kabiru Sokoto Was Set Free Without The Police Firing A Single Gun Shot At Those That Seized Him

According to SaharaReporters investigations, it is now brought to the notice of Nigerians how Christmas Day Boko Haram's Bomber turn fugitive, Kabri Sokoto who is still at large with a N50 million reward on him eluded the Nigeria Police Force.

Scores of locals in Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja have explained how the suspected kingpin of Boko Haram, Kabiru Umar, aka Kabiru Sokoto, was captured from Police.

Contrary to the story told so far, the locals told SaharaReporters through an interpreter in Angwar Tsohuwar Kasuwa in Abuja where the incident occurred,  that the people who came to take Kabiru from the police numbered in the hundreds, but were not armed.

Asking that their identity not be revealed, the sources said that the invading group liberated Kabiru Umar without the police firing a single shot until he had been taken away, as if to give the impression that there had been a fight.  In the process, however, the police killed one person in the area and arrested several people they claimed to be "suspects."

Nollywood Actor, David Ihezie Is Dead

Nollywood has started this year again on a sad note as it lost one of its veteran actors, David Ihezie, to the pangs of death yesterday, in Enugu.

The Enugu State based actor, who had starred in several movies, died in his home after protracted illness.

Chairman, Enugu State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ofiafulugu Mbaka, confirmed the death of the prolific actor to Vanguard yesterday.

According to Mbaka, “Ihezie’s death is another big loss to the entertainment sector and Nigeria as a whole. I was made to understand that he had been sick before he finally passed on.

Obviously, nobody would be happy when somebody dies. It’s shocking and there is nothing anyone can do.” Ihezie’s corpse has since been deposited at Ifem Medical centre, Enugu.

Gov. Adams Oshiomhole Provides Paliatives To Surpress The Effects Of Fuel Subsidy Removal

Edo State and Former NLC President, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, has rolled out palliatives that is suppose to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government in the state and admonished political leaders in the country learn to set aside personal political calculations in the larger interest of the polity.

The Governor in a state Broadcast, abolished all fees and levies including PTA in all public secondary schools, reduced school fees by N15,000 for under graduate students of the state-owned Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma both for indigenes and non-indigens, adding that the total value of this reduction will be paid to the University by the Edo State Government en bloc in addition to the N210 monthly subvention.

Other palliatives put in place includes,free medical treatment for pensioners and senior citizens at the age of 70 and above, 50 per cent reduction in transport fare to pupils and students, purchase of more buses and others.

Senator David Mark, Nigeria New "Mr. Fix It"

Some days ago during the hue and cry about fuel subsidy, when Nigerians were ready to occupy Nigeria, technocrats, politicians, artisans and, even the unemployed were deployed to the streets as foot soldiers for and against the removal of fuel subsidy. Some worked for their pockets other, selflessly, ie for the unity of Nigeria. In all, one person stood out. The senate president, Senator David Mark.

His role in ensuring that the subsidy crisis did not over blow, and thus destabilising the government of president Goodluck has earned him a new name -"Mr Fix It".

I must commend him and the speaker of the house of Representative for having the common man's view in mind, and not just playing the politics of what is in it for me.

Be that as it may, I implore them not to gloss over the vexed issue of corruption in the oil sector and all other government establishments but, to ensuring that all offenders are brought to book.

After all, if the country is rid of corrupt elements to the extent that foreign investors find irresistible and attractive to invest, our generation and those yet unborn will benefit.

Daddy Showkey Attacked By Gunmen Again

Gunmen have again attacked Nigerian music star, John Asieno a.k.a. Daddy Showkey. This not the first time in less than 2 years, he was attacked severally last year.

ASUU And Federal Goverment Move To End Strike In Two Weeks

An end appears to be in sight to the  nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities as parties involved in the dispute are said to have reached understanding.

A source in the Ministry of Education told our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday that the Federal Government was putting finishing touches to meeting some of the “reasonable” demands of ASUU.

The source, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media on the issue, noted that government was determined to end the deadlock within a “week or two.”

He explained that most of the issues would have been resolved before now but for the nationwide strike embarked by Labour and civil society groups over the removal of fuel subsidy.

He said “On our part, we have been working round the clock to end the strike, which we are hopeful will end within a week or two at the most.

“I can confirm to you that government has already agreed to meet some of the reasonable demands of ASUU like the reconstitution of boards and councils and the issue of the legal framework regarding the retirement age of Professors and the like. We are making reasonable progress.”

National President of ASUU, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, in a separate telephone interview with our correspondent in Abuja, confirmed that progress was being made.

Professors To Retire At Age 70....Senate

The Senate on Wednesday passed the bill to amend the retirement age of the academic staff of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country.

In response to agitations by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the retirement age for professors was reviewed from 65 to 70 years.

The bill states that, “The compulsory retiring age of academic staff of tertiary institutions shall be 65 years, while the retiring age of academics in the professorial cadre in the universities shall be 70 years.

“The law requiring a person to retire from the public service after serving 35 years shall not apply to academic staff of tertiary institutions.”

The Senate also approved the payment of pensions to a retiring professor at a rate equivalent to his or her last monthly salary while the Registrar, Librarian and Bursar of any tertiary institution would hold office for a period of five years, and an extension of one year if necessary.

It however rejected the proposal to have professors paid their full salaries just like retired military officers. But it approved that they be paid their annual basic salaries as pensions.

After the third reading of the bill, President of the Senate, David Mark, said the striking university teachers would do the nation, parents, present and future generation proud if they called off the strike.
